Proverbs
31:25-27 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and
she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the
teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her
household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Our government and others
spend billions of dollars to provide entertainment for our leisure hours. Labor
unions strike with demands for higher pay and shorter work weeks. More leisure
time is being added to the average American’s life. Yet many people, including
housewives, complain of being bored to death.
Why is it that some busy
wives and mothers never find enough hours in the day to do the many tasks at
hand in the home or on the job? Others seem oblivious to the same duties and
responsibilities. These spend their time texting, on-line, chatting on the
phone, or sipping lattes at the corner coffee shop.
There is no harm in having
leisure time in our lives. In fact, leisure times is beneficial for the
individual and others. But as in all good things, the noble wife or mother will
not allow these pleasantries to take them away from their family or work
responsibilities. Too much distraction will cause her to be guilty of eating
“the bread of idleness”.
It is no secret that work
has a therapeutic value and that one is happiest when fulfilling their role in
all of life. Fulfilling their responsibilities to family first will reveal less
time to be bored. In fact, it will bring her praise from her husband, children
and the community, too.
