Nehemiah 10:29,32 All these now join their fellow Israelites the nobles, and bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the LORD our Lord…. We assume the responsibility for carrying out the commands…
“Membership has its privileges.” That slogan has become a political battle cry these days. It is ingrained in the mind of too many Americans in all socio-economic classes here. Unfortunately, this same slogan resides in the minds and hearts of too many Christians, too.
The slogan is fine for American Express. But in God’s fellowship, membership has its responsibility. The people accept the responsibility to obey God’s Word, teach their families and support the needs of the Temple and those who labor there.
Too many people see the church as a club with privileges. They expect others to do the work while they recline. Pastors and Associates are the laborers, paid by the spectators.
The city of Jerusalem, the walls, the Temple and the Altar were God’s possessions. Anyone residing within the walls or allowed entrance into the city for worship were also God’s possessions. Here we see the people acknowledging these facts. They committed themselves to God, to and to one another. It was a public event that enabled all participants to then hold each other accountable. Without such a bond between the people and their leaders to their God, they could not be called God’s people.
